Mythbusters: Does Sugar Make You Gain Weight?

Although 2019 is only just beginning, your New Year’s resolution of eating healthier might have already gone down the drain. The thing about sugar is that the way our bodies process it has a lot to do with whether or not we gain weight, and sugar has properties that are both good and bad. Sugar is composed of two major molecules, glucose and fructose. While glucose is a molecule our bodies need to survive because it provides our cells and organs with energy, fructose is not necessary, and most of the organs in our bodies deem it unusable. Because of this, the only thing our bodies can do with fructose is to turn it into fat through our livers. Therefore the more sugar you eat, the more fructose your body consumes, the more fat your body produces.

One aspect about this that’s important to note, however, is that how active you dictate how much of the sugar your body will use up. If you tend to be inactive and don’t exercise that often, your body only needs to use a small amount of sugar for energy, thus forcing your body to store all that excess sugar to turn it into fat. After reading this, you might be thinking that the way around getting to eat a lot of sugar without having too much fat is simply exercising more, but just exercising isn’t necessarily the cure.

When you consume a large amount of sugar all at once, your pancreas understands it as a way for you to need a large amount of energy for any given physical activity. The pancreas then signals the rest of the body to produce insulin, a hormone that controls the disbursement of glucose so things like your muscle cells can use it, but what happens if the body releases too much insulin? If you end up eating one too many pieces of chocolate, you could have a sugar spike and then gain weight because of an overproduction of insulin—something that can’t just be exercised away.

What’s the correct way to make sure you keep off all those extra pounds then? Your best bet is limiting your sugar intake by opting for fruits instead of donuts and exercising regularly of course.
